A Day with John Michael Neill

Michael John Neill has actively been involved in genealogy reserach for nearly thrity years. An experienced courthouse, library, and archive researcher, he has written hundreds of how-to genealogy articles, given seminars on genealogy across the United States and led research trips to the Allen County Public Library and the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Michael has a master's degree in mathematics and is a professor at a community college in Illinois. He writes a regular genealogy how-to newsletter, Casefile Clues, which focuses on intermediate and advanced level research problems.

...For those who would like to join the Northland Genealogy Society, the $35.00 will cover membership dues for the rest of 2012.

Topics for his presentation will include:

  • Searching Techniques on Ancestry and Family Search: This presentation will focus on organizing your searches, effective search strategies, and problem-solving.
  • Determining Your Own Migration Trail: Our ancestor probably was a part of a larger chain of migration. See how to determine where your ancestor fit into that chain and how that knowledge can help your research.
  • Seeing Patterns: This session discusses a variety of ways to organize information with the intent of noticing trends, overlooked pieces of information, etc. Get beyond basic charts and forms.
  • When Your Dude is Lost: This session will discuss ways to work around that ancestor who appears to have been dropped off or picked up by a UFO.
  • Brick Walls A-Z: An alphabetical list of techniques to get around that genealogical brick wall.
  • Check the Northland Genealogy Society web site for updates.
